Boy/Scouter/Scouter Hat These are the most common headgear worn by Scouters and Girl Scouts today. These include a red Boy Scout hat, a blue and gold Cub Scouters hat, and a smoky bear campaign hat (with optional rain cover).
These are the two headdresses most commonly used today; the one on the right has a mesh back and the one on the left has a straight fabric back. Complete with the Centennial (current) Scout uniform, this cap can be worn with all previous uniforms.

Commercial hats can be purchased from the BSA Supply Department using their custom design catalog; or from a number of local and regional businesses involved in creative hat design. Companies that create custom caps for your device that include one or more official BSA marks MUST be registered with the BSA Supply Department.
Before signing any contract, check with your local council about a contract with a local or regional company, as only local councils can sign contracts with companies. The Cav Hat tradition began in the early days before the Vietnam War. Lt. Col. John B. Stockton, commander of the 3rd Battalion, 17th Cavalry, is credited with starting the tradition of cavalry wearing stetsons, much to the dismay of the division's command group. Until the 11th Airborne Assault Division was renamed the 1st Cavalry (Airmobile) Division, members of its unit, the 1st Squadron of the 9th Cavalry Regiment, wore a cap.

The key, Henry, is the last part of the first sentence of the paragraph above: "...these are wearable if you can get them." For some reason (probably due to popularity) these hats are HARD TO FIND (Official, not the ones you buy from Brigade Quartermasters or other military stores).
OFFICIALS like the one behind me on the bookcase (earned by being the best patrol leader in my troop for the year) have an official BSA stamp inside the hat and a place for your name and of course the BSA is outlined.

It may have always looked at least a little inconspicuous, but they've definitely changed the way it sits on the head. It used to be angled forward like the instructor, but now it's angled back and I think it looks a lot less cool/stiff now.

This applies not only to the red beret, but also to the "ear-ear" cap, the campaign cap ("smoky bear") and the flat scout field cap (in the military). we called it the "overseas" or "garrison" hat) and seven other hats that the BSA produced over the years for youth and adults.
Many of these hats are no longer sold through the BSA Supply Department. I was told that basically most BSA uniforms have a shelf life of ten years. You may be able to get these hats (and a few others that I didn't scan here, like the explorer field hats ("flat" or "garrison") worn from 1958 to 1975 or so) at thrift stores, auctions
, dealers, from collectors of memorabilia, etc. The Supply Department keeps IN STOCK only those hats listed in the latest BSA Supply Department catalogs. However, as I wrote below, there is a small chance that some of these hats will be "found in the back box" and given to locals.

The financial status of your unit will determine which hat or type of hat to wear. The "Cav Hat" is a standard black cavalry hat, Stetson or other appropriate make, with a 3 inch brim and a black leather chinstrap.
The chinstrap is attached to the hat string and passes through the brim. The chinstrap is worn over the user's head if not secured. Once installed, the chinstrap can be worn under the chin to hold the hat on the head and prevent it from falling off.
If your "Cav Hat" doesn't have a chin, it's just a black hat, commonly called a "cowboy hat."
